Talking Through First-Day Nerves

A few honest conversations go a long way toward easing back-to-school anxiety.

Ask specifically what they're excited about and what feels nerve-wracking, rather than a general 'how do you feel.' Normalize both feelings existing at once. If it helps, do a practice run of the drop-off or the walk to the bus stop, and remind them of one friend or familiar face they'll see on day one.
